The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee tells the story of six spellers battling in a fierce competition of words. The production was the first musical I ever choreographed, with performances from Oct 14-16, 2018. While working on this show, I discovered my passion for choreographing theater and teaching actors. My experience performing in musical theater as a child coupled with my interest in choreography manifested into a love for theater choreography. In this production, I worked with the actors in exercises to bring out their playfulness and childishness. Movement established the imaginary worlds inside the spellers’ minds. Audience participation is a crucial component of the musical, and integrating audience members every performance into choreographed sequences was an exciting challenge.
