CABARET
By John Kander & Fred Ebb
Directed by Lynda Paul
Choreographed by Gabrielle Niederhoffer
Set during the rise of the Third Reich, Cabaret centers on the sensually self-indulgent nightlife of the Kit Kat Klub. The Master of Ceremonies guides the audience through a night to “leave your troubles outside.” Cabaret presents a chillingly relevant reminder of the dangers of complicity in the face of fascism. Cabaret was Yale’s first musical production in two years since the start of the Covid pandemic with performances from November 17-20, 2021. Directed by award-winning Lynda Paul, our production emphasized the conviviality of the Kit Kat Klub in contrast to the oppressive Nazi regime outside on the streets. The choreography paid homage to the show’s original choreographer Fosse, while exploring new ways to represent the life of Nazi Germany. I took inspiration from images of cabaret culture in Weimar Republic Germany from the Yale Archives. The choreography adopted the techniques of Brecht, making the audience uncomfortable through performance. I was also interested in portraying the infantilization of female performers under the male gaze in cabaret performances.
